Fungal Infections
While
the word "fungal" evokes negative connotations,
some fungi have actually made our lives easier. Penicillin
and other antibiotics are made from fungi and serve as treatments
for bacterial diseases. Other fungi, like certain yeasts,
are essential for making healthy foods like some breads
and cheeses. Mushrooms are also a fungus.
Fungi live in air, soil,
water, on plants, and sometimes in the human body. Some
fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air. You can
get a fungal infection by inhaling the spores or having
them land on your skin. You are more likely to get a fungal
infection if you have a weakened immune system or take antibiotics.
